Microsoft launching Vista Plus! Pack

Once upon a time Microsoft came up with a product called Microsoft Plus! that offered a handful of games and extra features that probably should have been included with Windows in the first place. There were Plus! packs released for every version of Windows from Windows 95 all the way up to XP. Plus! packs included everything from the first version of Internet Explorer to desktop themes and utilities for managing media files.

But when Microsoft launched Windows Vista, we thought they had killed off the Plus! pack in favor of Windows Ultimate Extras. But now it looks like Microsoft is bringing back the Plus! Pack.

Some folks in the WinBeta forums noticed a listing for a Windows Vista Plus! Pack at Canada’s Future Shop. It looks like the new version of Vista Plus! Pack will include a few games but no Windows enhancements. The product description isn’t very useful, since it appears to display just a few features of Windows Vista, not the Plus! Pack itself.

The Future Shop lists the product as available for shipping on February 15th for $40 Canadian, which these days is about the same as $40 US.

Porn industry struggles because of YouTube clones

Steve Hirsch’s Vivid Entertainment, the biggest name in the $12 billion-a-year adult video industry, filed a lawsuit last month against PornoTube, one of a handful of popular video-sharing sites styled as the dirtier cousins of YouTube, Redstone’s legal nemesis. Similar to the Google-owned video juggernaut, PornoTube has become a destination for free porn by letting anyone post sex videos without filtering out clips that might be copyrighted. Hirsch believes PornoTube doesn’t do enough to keep his content off its site, and, like YouTube, it has leveraged the traffic it now delivers into marketing deals with other sex video producers. It has left Hirsch, a leader in an industry that has welcomed new technologies like the VCR and VOD much more than its Hollywood equivalents, with little choice but to sue the pants off the free sites.

And the sites are :) :

The Wii finished the year as the top-selling console, with nearly 6.3 million units sold domestically. That compares to 4.6 million units for the Xbox 360 and nearly 2.6 million units for the PS3 for the year, according to NPD data. Among handheld devices, the Nintendo DS fared even better, with 8.5 million in sales for the year compared to 3.8 million for the Sony PSP. For game software, sales totaled more than $8.6 billion in the U.S. for the year, up 34% from the previous year. The most popular games in November remained at the top of the list for December. The top-selling game of the month was “Call of Duty 4″ from Activision Inc., which moved nearly 1.5 million units. Activision also had the No. 3 title for the month with “Guitar Hero III” for the PlayStation 2, which moved 1.25 million units.

MacBook Air processor situation gets explained

We already knew the basic details about the processor at the heart of Apple’s MacBook Air, but those itching to know exactly how Apple and Intel managed to cram everything into that oh so small package may want to head over to AnandTech, which has pieced together a fairly thorough report on the matter. As the site reports, the processor is based on Intel’s 65nm Merom architecture and packs an 800MHz bus, yet it uses the significantly smaller chip package that Intel had originally only planned to debut with the launch of its Montevina laptop platform later this year. That combination, along with the Intel 965GMS chipset with integrated graphics, allowed for a 60% reduction in total footprint size, and a TDP rating of just 20W, as opposed to 35W from the regular Core 2 Duo processor. If that’s still not enough MacBook Air minutia you, you can hit up the link below for the full rundown.

Vista successor rumored to be on track for 2009 release

19 01 2008

vista-and-beyond.jpg

umors of Microsoft’s successor to Vista have been cropping up virtually since day one, and if this latest one is to be believed, it looks like one of the earliest may have been right on target after all. According to TG Daily, “several industry sources” are now saying that the a very early version of the so-called “Windows 7″ OS has already shipped to “key partners,” and that Microsoft is now eying the second half of 2009 for a release of the real deal. That’s a slight revision from the most recent rumors, which had pegged the debut as late as 2010 or, more vaguely, sometime within the next three years. As if that wasn’t enough, Microsoft’s apparently also lined up the next two early versions to be released, with the so-called M2 build slated for April or May of this year, and the M3 release slated to drop sometime in the third quarter. Given recent history, however, it’s probably not the best idea to start marking your calendars just yet.
