The riaa…again

The RIAA isn’t letting up on college and university campuses in its effort to clamp down on unauthorized P2P activity. Since revealing their new strategy in February of 2007, which emphasized the decision to utilize “pre-lawsuit” letters, three significant rounds of copyright enforcement have been attempted. Although similar with the RIAA’s previous lawsuit strategy, this process allows the accused to settle at a discount rather than face the potential of a heftier fine.

While outwardly not considerably different than the RIAA’s previous strategy, the main impact has been the reaction of the colleges and universities. Since the school is the student’s ISP, the school must perform a majority of the footwork, i.e. tracking down the student via the IP address/time stamp. When the student is identified, the alleged pirate receives the “pre-lawsuit” letter.

The reaction from campuses has varied. Some have refused the RIAA, such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison, while others, such as Ohio University, have severely curtailed P2P usage. Regardless of individual circumstances, the RIAA is continuing its enforcement unabated. In an announcement made today, the RIAA sent 402 pre-lawsuit letters to 13 schools. The following is a list of schools and letters received by each.

“Brandeis University (15 pre-litigation settlement letters), Duke University (35), Iowa State University (15), Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT (23), Northern Illinois University (50), Syracuse University (20), Tufts University (15), University of Georgia (19), University of Iowa (25), University of Southern California (50), University of South Florida (50), University of Tennessee (50), and the University of Texas - Austin (35).”

HP’s m8010y and d4890y desktops to sport HD combo drives, digital tuners

Just because HP has buried the Digital Entertainment Center doesn’t mean that it’s forgetting about the media-centric crowd, as the company’s forthcoming m8010y and d4890y will offer up some fairly swank high-definition niceties. Aside from offering customers the option for an Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad processor and NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card, this duo will also include a mysterious dual-format combo drive to handle both BD and HD DVD responsibilities. While we can only assume that the GGW-H10N will be the drive of choice, both PCs will boast HD DVD / Blu-ray playback with burning abilities including on the latter, and as if that wasn’t enough HD goodness crammed into a PC, moneyed consumers can also opt to have ATI’s TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner pre-installed as well. There’s no word just yet surrounding pricing, exact configurations, or a launch timeframe, but word on the street suggests that the combo drive should be made available to the adoring public within “four to six weeks.”

Dell+Microsoft+Novell

The adoration for Linux that has been flowing from Round Rock of late is both refreshing and curious, and Dell has just taken its respect for the open-source OS to another level by signing on with Microsoft and Novell. While Linux users have long griped (and protested) about Microsoft, it’s been no secret that Michael Dell has a thing for Ubuntu, and now it sounds like Dell will be “buying SUSE Linux Enterprise Server certificates from Microsoft,” and moreover, “will be setting up a services and marketing program aimed at getting users of open-source platforms to switch to the new SUSE Linux offering.” With the agreement inked, the Texas Powerhouse becomes the “first major systems provider to align with Microsoft and Novell in the collaboration,” and judging by all the other recent Linux happenings in the Dell arena, we’d say this deal aligns perfectly with its current strategy.
